I've loved this passage for so long now I can't even remember when I first read the piece. I think "Requiem for a Friend" is one of the truest pieces ever written in any language. It's elevating and heart-breaking at once - and the above passage may be my favorite but I encourage you to read the piece and find your own. There are many likely candidates.
This is a really interesting, touching, and highly enjoyable anthology. Yes, one of my stories is included in it - `The Great Fish Tank War' - but that's not why I'm reviewing it here nor is it why I think so highly of the book. I've been published in anthologies in the past and, in a number of cases, have been very disappointed by the company I've wound up keeping. In this case, however, I'm delighted to find my work surrounded by very capable writers who understand their craft and know how to tell a story. I don't want to single anyone out and ruin the reading adventure for you. If you like cats you'll love this book and if you're a major cat fan you'll find it as irresistible as your favorite feline friend. Even if cats aren't your life's focus, though, I think you'll enjoy the book for the great story telling. And, no, I'm not promoting it because it will bring me a cent. The royalties for the sale of the book go to the American Humane Society. I'm honored to have been included in the anthology and hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
